I thank MP Melvin Yong for filing an adjournment motion on Keeping Workplaces Safe Beyond the Heightened Safety Period (HSP) in Parliament on Tuesday. In response, I said that workplace safety and health (WSH) did not begin with the start of the HSP, and neither does it stop when the HSP ends. The Ministry of Manpower remains committed to our WSH2028 aspiration to achieve a fatal injury rate of below 1.0 per 100,000 workers on a sustained basis by 2028. This is a feat consistently achieved by only four countries. In fact, our rolling 12-month fatal injury rate to-date is close to our goal, at 1.0. We must press on to sustain the gains we have made from the HSP. The Multi-Agency Workplace Safety and Health Taskforce (MAST) will progressively roll out the Safe Accountability, Focus and Empowerment (SAFE) measures that were announced when we exited the HSP and drive new measures. These measures will strengthen WSH ownership and accountability at the sector, company, and individual level. Building a stronger workplace safety culture is a collective responsibility. Employers and corporate leadership must take charge of their company’s WSH practices and inculcate a culture of safety first. Workers too must follow safety procedures and look out for one another by reporting unsafe practices. When everyone plays their part, our workers can return home safely to their loved ones.
