@erilibrary: This the backstory on how the Hausas a Nigerian tribe ended up in Eritrea. The Hausa ethnic group of Eritrea, known collectively as ‘Tokharir’, are a Muslim people who migrated to Eritrea from the Sahelian and the sparse savanna areas of southern Niger and northern Nigeria respectively. Their settlement in Southwest Eritrea was due to the increasing exploitation of the peasantry in Northern Nigeria and religious pilgrimages to Mecca. Many of these immigrants brought their families along on their pilgrimage journey. To sustain themselves during the long journey and to afford the crossing of the Red Sea, they would stop and work as farmhands or sharecroppers during the agricultural season. The pilgrimage route through Massawa was not a new phenomenon.
