It depends. On my flight from Paris to Atlanta, it was light out the entire flight (except for the last ~1.5 hr out of 10.5) and the open windows made it hard to sleep

No this 100% depends on the route. Long haul during ‘sleep time’ - it should 100% be closed. Short or mid haul or long haul day flight - no issue.

I agree with this in theory, but the light also effects the ENTIRE cabin. it's kind of like saying "I have the privilege of having speakers on my phone, so I'm going to use it".

Flying internationally they will ask you to close your window during sleep time . They may also ask you to open your window on landing .

sleep masks that help keep things dark if you want to take a nap or rest your eyes. also antiglare glasses. pretty cheap!
