It feels awful when your child says this to you and it’s natural to want to take their pain away, jump in and reassure your child that they look great, or that they’re beautiful. They may want and need to hear it (though they may not believe you), but before you say do this: 💫 NAME THE FEELING: eg: Gosh, I can see that feels bad for you, I can see you’re feeling sad 💫 BE CURIOUS: Ask why they’re saying that? Have they heard it elsewhere? Who said it? How does it make them feel? What does it mean to them. 💫 LISTEN: This is soooo important. Listen without feeling you have to jump in and fix or correct. 💫 VALIDATE: Validate how they feel. Eg ‘That’s tough’, ‘I totally get that you feel sad and angry’, ‘that sucks’. 💫 COME ALONGSIDE THEM: by putting yourself in their shoes and helping them unpick what they feel 💫 IDENTIFY THEIR QUALITIES: Help them identify the qualities they value in their friends (it won’t be looks) and then help them identify their own qualities and what their friends love about them 💫 COMFORT: Give them a hug and comfort them if it feels right 💫 AVOID: offering them diet or exercise fixes as they may feel you agree they need to change their body and that doing that will make them feel better 💫 LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN: for them to come and talk to you about this any time without judgement, criticism or fixing. ✨ The level of detail and conversation you have with your child will depend on their age. If your child is very young it will be enough to name their feelings, validate them, find out where they’ve heard it and comfort them. ✨ The older they ask the more curious you can be. ✨ You may need to revisit the conversation a number of times as they process their feelings and as they grow and mature. If you’ve experienced this pop a 💜 in the comments and let me know. Save it for whenever you need it and follow for more 🗣️ SHARE widely to help others #clinicalpsychologist #parenting #parentingtips #bodyimage
