Fiercely chasing joy, Finding magic in unexpected places. Revisiting difficult spaces, Those etched with old traumas. To experience them in my own way, On my own terms, To again breathe their air, but new. Releasing my pain through my pen And finding my words invited For print in esteemed publications. My story, my world, made eternal, Little seeds of hope, planted To spread, to grow, to flourish. Sure, I have the memories, the photos. But there’s something satisfying. Gratifying. For seeing it written in smooth gel ink, At that subtle slant And remembering the anticipation As it built before every event. Whether with excitement or hesitation, This is where I went, this is what I did. These are the risks I took In my seventh year of cancer survivorship. These are the adventures That I once never thought possible, Inconceivable, out of reach. But I’m here. And I did it. I did it all. And I’ll do it again in ‘23. Bigger, better, my visions expanded Like a panorama drifting off the screen. So, little calendar of mine, I keep you, I cherish you. I’ll return to you in reflection from time to time. But today, I file you away. Thank you for reminding me of what this body can do, All that I have accomplished. And when I awake on this day, 365 days from this very breath, I haven’t a clue what I will see. But I will flip through the pages And I will lean in with excitement. I’m choosing to believe in the greatness, An abundance of blessings ahead Incomprehensible to me today But welcomed and prayed for, Made sweeter by knowing It may be better than I could dream.
