My parents had no concept of general maintenance or even hygiene and adding that to my dad's hoarding I'm surprised I never found mice or roaches. Tons of ants and centipedes, but still. That was luck

I cleaned out my SILs house last summer. When I tell you full of cockroaches I’m telling you all walls, ceilings, toilets…. They were everywhere & 3 kids lived there…

The house I grew up in was similar to what you’ve described. Bullied for the smell on my clothes. At 29 I will not walk into a house if it looks unsanitary. Can’t stomach it.
