Spirituality takes work. At first, it might seem like all love and light, but the deeper you go, the more your shadows rise to meet you. And that’s where many people stop. They don’t want to face the grief, the rage, the shame. So instead of integrating, they bypass, or distort, stay in the shadows. Or when it gets too hard, they run back to Abrahamic religions—because it feels easier to give it all to Jesus. Christianity says: Give me your sins. Hand over your guilt, your power, your responsibility. I’ll wipe it all clean. And that can feel like such a relief for someone who’s deeply hurting, especially if they’ve deeply hurt others. Because real shadow work, it’s not a performance, it’s ugly. It’s painful, it requires a reckoning, a humbling. And it requires embodiment and accountability. And Christianity, as it’s been shaped by colonization, often teaches the opposite. It separates you from your body. It tells you your flesh is sinful. It makes holiness about disconnection, instead of honoring the body as a sacred vessel. What I see over and over again is that many Christians haven’t truly forgiven themselves. They’re just covering their wounds with Bible verses. But the shame, the guilt, the judgment, it’s still there. Just hidden behind another spiritual performance. True healing doesn’t happen when you give your power away. It happens when you reclaim it. Here’s the truth: A bully will stay a bully unless they face the wound that taught them hurting others made them feel safe. A narcissist doesn’t stop being a narcissist just because they found eloquent spiritual lingo or Jesus. And to be clear— I love Jesus, Yeshua. As much as I love Gugmatz too. Yeshua was a radical, a rebel, and a healer. He taught us how to live in connection with the Divine and each other. Not the sanitized, colonized version that shames the body and demands blind obedience. Yes, the spiritual community has its own shadows. But at least many of us are doing the work to name them. To face them. To move through them. Because all systems need to be looked at and brought back into right relation. Dogmatic religion, on the other hand, often sweeps too much under the rug. Wraps it in moral superiority. And weaponizes it against anything different. That’s not truth. That’s control and that has always been dangerous. So what do we do? We return to truth. Not performance. To healing that touches the root. To love that doesn’t bypass, but integrates. To forgiveness that comes not from erasing the past but from reclaiming your power and living in alignment. You don’t have to be perfect. But you do have to show up to do the work. No one else can do it for you.
