🚨 PREGNANT AND SCHEDULED FOR EUTHANASIA 🚨 Aly is pregnant. And I need to be very clear about what happened yesterday because I advocated for her in person. I spoke directly with a supervisor about Aly’s condition and the fact that she is pregnant. Initially, there was resistance. I was told that despite the pregnancy, she would remain on the euthanasia list due to her labeled behavior. They did spare her yesterday though. But that doesn’t add up. I have seen dogs with far more concerning behavioral notes be given time, space, and grace especially when they are pregnant. That has been the pattern. That has been the standard. And Aly is not being given that same consideration. When I met her, she came to the front of the kennel. She wasn’t lunging, not escalating, not showing the level of instability that these notes suggest. She was cautious, overwhelmed, and yes fearful. She did not want to be leashed. But since when does fear of a leash in a high stress shelter environment equal aggression deserving of euthanasia? It doesn’t. What I saw was a young dog trying to cope. A dog choosing distance over conflict. A dog trying to make herself small in an environment that is completely overwhelming. And somehow, that is being used against her. What is even more concerning is that she has still not been given a “Mama” designation which strongly suggests her pregnancy was either overlooked or only very recently acknowledged. And if that designation isn’t there, there is a very real risk that nothing about her outcome changes. That means today at 2PM she could still be euthanized pregnant, unseen, and without ever being given the same chance that so many other pregnant dogs receive. She is a frightened 2 year old dog who has not been given the time or handling needed to show who she actually is. She deserves reassessment. She deserves patience.
