Visually impaired runner Libby Clegg and Paralympic guide, Chris Clarke, ran wrist to wrist, perfecty synchronized, and won gold in the 100-meter and 200-meter races at the Paralympic Games in 2016. Clarke didn’t qualify for England’s national team and couldn’t compete in the 2016 Olympics, but his journey wasn’t over. He and Clegg trained for two months together so the competition would feel as natural as possible—and it paid off! We’re highlighting remarkable #womeninsports history leading up to #Paris2024. I attended the 2002 Winter Olympics and immediately following the Paralympics in Salt Lake City. The Winter Olympics was like attending the Indianapolis 500, a bunch of wealth, unimpressed, and entitled people. The Paralympics was like attending a NASCAR race, joyous, appreciative and humble people having the time of their lives. The Para-athletes were incredible and their supports even more so. One of the best experiences about human determination and spirit.
