@kidmentalwellnessnurse: Many children are being recommended Melatonin by their pediatricians and family friends as a way to help promote sleep in kids as little as 2 y/o. Heck, my son even took it periodically as a 9-10 y/o, but not as a daily sleep supplement There are 4 things you should know about melatonin before considering giving it to your kids. 1) Melatonin is a hormone that is naturally produced in your body and the only hormone that you can buy over the counter. You would never generic estrogen (which is used in birth control) or generic testosterone (which is a controlled substance) bought in the supplement aisle of your local drug store. 2) Long term high dose Melatonin can affect development of puberty. Developmentally, an increase in melatonin in nocturnal animals signals an increase in sex hormones because that is when many night animals reproduce. Is this something we want happening to our kindergarteners? 3) You can have side effects to melatonin and there have been reports of overdoses on Melatonin. Side effects to Melatonin include upset stomach, vivid dreams, daytime drowsiness, and sleeplessness. 4) One thing they don’t tell you when you buy Melatonin over the counter is that if you take it and lay in bed on your phone or watching tv, or exposure your eyes to light, it converts melatonin to serotonin and will keep your child awake. Melatonin is not recommended in kids under 10, so the increasing amount of kids from ages 4 on up that are on Melatonin is really alarming because their body will become dependent on the synthetic version and not make it itself. There is a previous video in my profile about bedtime routine and activities that promote sleep. I hope these tips were extremely helpful, so my suggestion is for you to definitely get a supplement that will help you or your child naturally produce melatonin. I do recommendations all the time, so if you want me to recommend the one I use and recommend for my patients, put MELATONIN in the comments and give me a like and follow, and send me a message, and I will get that over to you right away. we've given our daughter half of a kids dose occasionally(no more than once a week) since she was 3, she's 8 now. Could we have messed up her hormone development?

My ADHD son took it from kindergarten to 3rd grade when it started giving him nightmares and he didn’t want it anymore. He’s been in the 100th percentile since he was an infant but he’s now a 5’8 160
