Don't underestimate the power of isometric work in rehab from patellar tendon pain and strengthening! We know from the research that isometrics can serve a role in decreasing pain levels but to what extent? One study found that performing 5 reps of 45-second isometric push on a knee extension machine helped to decrease patellar tendon pain for several hours following activity. While isometrics serve a role in pain modulation, the benefits from isometrics doesn't stop there. Isometrics can also be a good way to strengthen a tendon at an optimal range for a specific sport. Several studies have shown that the addition of isometric exercises to a training routine can help to strengthen a muscle and tendon at that specific range, without as much fatigue as may be experienced with a more dynamic or active exercise of that muscle. Now, we aren't saying to drop all the other strength training you are doing and just start doing wall sits, but what we are saying is that the addition of an isometric exercise at a certain range can serve as a healthy addition to a sport-specific strength routine - food for thought.
