Wild rice from start to finish #asmr It was an absolute honor getting to forage and process northern wild rice (Zizania palustris) with @Samuel Thayer. Getting to experience the volume of this incredible wild food that we were able to harvest and process into a delicious wild food was mind-blowing to me. It may seem like a lot of work (and my video barely captures the labor involved, like the dancing portion took 45 minutes), but when you end up with buckets full of wild rice, you better believe it’s worth it! I got to eat wild rice every day of my visit with Sam and we barely even put a dent in the amount we had gathered. Wild rice is just one of many wild foods where you truly get to witness the abundance of nature. This is an abundance that *you* can take part in. I hope this video inspires you to learn more about the wild foods that are present all around you. Please check out Sam’s full video on wild rice, which explains every bit of the process in detail. Also, check out @Alexis Nikole’s new video that explores the history and tradition of wild rice in North America! The steps you see in the video begin with gathering wild rice by using rice knockers to “knock” the kernels into the canoe. During a good season, experienced ricers can gather more than a hundred pounds in a day! Sam makes it look easy, but there is a LOT of skill involved. Then we packed up the rice and took it back to Sam’s to be parched. This is where we heat the husks up to make them brittle. Next comes “dancing.” We put on soft-bottomed moccasins and ground all the rice together, which breaks up the husks but leaves the kernels intact. This is *strenuous*! It easily takes at least half an hour of continuous movement and grinding. (Btw Sam had run a marathon just three days prior) I just helped at the end! Then, we do a quick winnow to see how many of the husks have been separated. This continues until 99% are off! The final step is winnowing (with the help of a fan) to get them completely clean! Wild-harvested and home-processed rice is one of the greatest foods I have ever eaten. It tastes 1000x better than what you can buy from the grocery store which uses a very different process. I hope you can try it someday! Sam, thank you again so much for taking the time to teach me this wild food. #wildrice #foraging #zizania
