The coppery purple capped chonky fruiting bodies belong to the #CorrugatedMilkCap #Lactifluuscorrugis, a mycorrhizal mushroom that associates with hardwood tree species across the Eastern seaboard and into the Midwest. This species is edible when cooked, it has dense meaty flesh and mild but delicious mushroom flavor. I prefer boiling it roasting pan frying, better texture for milkcaps. . When injured milkcaps exude a sticky milky latex as a defense mechanism against bugs and slugs trying to eat the mushroom. Gumming up their mouth parts with an unpalatable astringent smelly milk. The fluid is held under high turgor pressure in the developing tissue of the mushroom, but as it fully matures and the spores stop dropping, the milk no longer flows. . The exuded latex is sticky, smelly fishy, and will stain your hands brown.
