What should I do when my child hits? What should I do when my child throws himself on the floor? I get asked these questions ALL.THE.TIME! And my response is always the same—it depends on why! When you go to the doctor because you have a cold, the doctor doesn’t give everyone with a cold the same prescription. He might run some tests to see why you are sick and then determine the best treatment. Guess what? The same is true in behavior analysis! We don’t treat all hitting behavior the same—we have to determine why our children are hitting and then determine the best response. In this video, Grace was upset because she wanted her train to stay on the track. Had I helped her when she threw the train, Grace would have learned that throwing is an effective way to communicate and get her needs met. Instead, I waited for her to respond more appropriately by saying, “Mommy, get it,” and then I got the train. The response that was reinforced was her speaking, not throwing. IMPORTANT! Please keep in mind that Grace has learned how to functionally communicate for almost two years, and I knew she had the words to navigate this situation. Problem behavior should be looked at as a skill deficit, and we need to teach a skill to replace it. If your child is still learning that words are better than problem behavior, you must teach them what to say instead. Therefore, you would say something like, “Gracie, tell me to get it,” and when Grace echoed me, that would be the response I reinforced. #aba #appliedbehavioranalysis #behavior #parenting #parentsofinstagram #positiveparenting #parentingtips #toddlers #toddlersofinstagram #behaviormanagement #parentsupport #momssupportingmoms #newmom #momsofinstagram #parenttraining #parent #bcba #rbt #parentingishard #parentcoach #toddlertantrums #toddlermom #toddlermomlife #behavioranalysis #behavioranalyst #behaviors #parentingjourney #parentsbelike #teachersofinstagram #parenthood #parentsoftiktok #parenttok #toddlersoftiktok #toddlertok #fyp #foryou
