Grow your own Strawberries! 🍓🌱😋 As the name suggests bare root plants are sent without any pot or soil but are a much cheaper alternative to buying potted plants. You can grow strawberries from seed that form inside its 200 tiny fruits, yes botanists actually call the strawberry a "false fruit," because a strawberry is actually multiple fruits which consists of many tiny individual fruits embedded in a fleshy receptacle. The little seed like specks, which are commonly considered seeds, are the true fruits, called achenes, and each of them surrounds a tiny seed. 🍓🤯 so technically a strawberry isn’t a ‘berry’ at all! Anyway, you can also save runners from existing plants, but if you are just starting out and want a low cost option, bare root plants are great. Once they arrive you want to soak them overnight to rehydrate the roots, I’ve chosen: Cambridge favourite, Honeoye and Florence - as they produce fruit at different times. Once your plants have soaked you want to add a little bit of compost to a pot, remove any dead leaves or debris from the plant and then pop it into the pot and top up with more compost. Just ensure that the crown of the plant is above soil level. Then give it a good water and pop in a label until you’re ready to plant it out. You could plant them straight out into the growing bed after soaking, just make sure they’re at least 35cm apart. The plants will grow quickly and will start to produce flowers and from the flowers the fruit will form. Then just enjoy your home grown strawberry’s, even though they aren’t actually berry’s, they are still my favourite! 😂 #strawberries #growstrawberries #urbangardening #organicgardening #gardeningtips
