‘Level’ (1997 and 2021) by Hans Hemmert (The first 4 images shown are from the original 1997 installation - the rest are from the 2012 remake) The work ‘level’ (to be 2 m tall) by the artist Hans Hemmert, first shown in a Berlin gallery in 1997, was newly produced and recontextualized for Gegenwart: Doing Youth. When visiting the exhibition in the Galerie der Gegenwart of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, each visitor is provided with a pair of light blue platform shoes. Depending on the respective height, the heights of the platforms vary so that all visitors are adjusted to the height of two meters and consequently meet at eye level. ‘Youth’ is always associated with attributions, expectations and social norms. Especially in Germany, these are often deficits such as naivety and a lack of reason; in short, youth is constructed through a difference in relation to adults. As a result, the egalitarian element of Hemmert’s work is to be brought to the fore. While so-called ‘young adults’ were previously denied the status of a fully-fledged subject, Hemmert’s work enables a drastic democratization of status: as soon as the platform shoes are put on, no one is looked down on anymore; existing attributions and power relations are problematized.
