I am not sure how it happened, but Periwinkle’s leg was broken when she came to me nearly 2 years ago. It had already healed by the time I got her and, after looking at her x-rays, the vet and I decided it wasn’t necessary to do surgery or try to fix it since she is not in pain and she is able to perch and get around without issue. As a result of how the leg healed, she has limited mobility and requires help to preen her tail and the feathers under it. So that I don’t have to force her to be held and break her trust every time it needs to be done, I made it into a trained behavior using positive reinforcement. This trick is also handy for cutting nails and building more trust with hands in general. Note: Do not attempt this with a bird who is scared of hands. It is best done with birds who are comfortable with hands but are not comfortable being held. #parrot #bird #rescue #parakeet #budgie #conure #parrotlet
