As a trans girl, I want to write about something that’s been bothering me. We already know there aren’t many trans characters in movies and TV shows. Even though trans characters have become more visible recently, there’s still not enough representation—especially when it comes to trans characters being played by actual trans actors. In many shows and movies where there are trans women characters, they’re often played by cis men. Now, don’t get me wrong—I love a lot of these characters, and some of the actors are undeniably talented. For example, Liz Taylor in American Horror Story or Hyun-ju in Squid Game. Take Liz Taylor, for instance—I honestly can’t imagine anyone other than Denis O’Hare playing that role. He did an incredible job and created such an iconic character. You’ve probably heard of The Danish Girl. Eddie Redmayne plays Lili, a character who holds such an important place in queer history. While his performance was undeniably strong, something about it just didn’t resonate fully with me. It always felt like something was missing. Because no matter how much we love these characters, they just don’t carry the same weight or authenticity as when they’re played by a real trans actor. It’s already a well-known fact that in many parts of the world, trans women struggle to find employment.
