![In 1942, the Mengo Palace (the Lubiri) was the center of an important milestone for the Buganda Kingdom in Uganda: Kabaka Edward Mutesa II was crowned on his 18th birthday, November 19, 1942, at Buddo before officially taking up residence. [1] Here is a quick timeline of the palace's significance during that era: 1939: Following the death of his father Kabaka Daudi Chwa II, a 15-year-old Mutesa II was officially installed outside the Lubiri at Mengo. [1] 1942: On November 19 (his 18th birthday), he was officially crowned as the 35th Kabaka of Buganda. He took on full ruling powers, transitioning the kingdom from a regency council into his personal reign. [1, 2, 3] The 1940s & Beyond: Following his coronation, the Cambridge-educated Kabaka continued to govern from this sprawling palace. The palace survived this decade intact, only to become the site of a dramatic civil war decades later in 1966 when forces loyal to Milton Obote attacked the site. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] The Reign of Mutesa II Buganda royalty and historians view the 1940s and the coronation of Mutesa II as a pivotal bridge between traditional kingdom leadership and the dawn of independent Uganda. “Cambridge-educated Sir Edward F.
