Oh! I just did this! Go to settings>general>iphone storage>scroll down to photos>optimize. It saves them to the cloud and saves smaller size on phone

i’d get an external hard drive to ensure i had og copies but id also rec uploading a ton to a diff cloud service (drop box/google drive) so u can clear from ur phone but download off the app later
