I think the "would you like something real to cry about" line completely messed up my ability to understand anger, disappointment & sadness, etc. it means my boundaries are a mess too.

Victoria D 🇺🇸🆘❌ :
I got expelled from high school (long story) and my parents up and sold our family home of 40 years because they felt so ashamed. I was falling apart, but it was all about them.

My mother is like this. She was a screamer. I struggle with this too, but I go silent when it involves my son because I don't want to scream at him. An improvement, but still not where I'd like to be

My mom cannot stand when I cry. The minute a conversation gets emotional, “We’ll talk later.” Expressing emotion is not the end of the world.

One of the reasons why my mom and I aren't talking is because I'm honest when I say I'm still mad at her. She doesn't want to deal with me til I'm no longer mad at her.

My whole family tiptoes around my silent gen. grandparents because neither of them ever learned to deal with feelings. It’s rough.

The way my mom says nana will be sad if you don’t hug her and I turn to my kids and say nanas feelings are not your responsibility

I think Boomers as whole, raised by the silent gen, were not allowed to express feelings. So they were ill-equipped and then that impacted their parenting. (1)

I brought something up once with my mom and her response was, "Just disregard everything I've ever said." How convenient for her.

My mom hates when I speak directly, she assumes I’m mad or trying to argue.

This is definitely my mom. And she will write of any "negative" feelings with "someone else has it worse". I think perspective is important but it's okay to not be happy all the time.

I’ve just realized this is what my therapist is working with me on when she has me sit with an uncomfortable feeling and approach it with curiosity rather than judgment. It’s so hard.

My mom’s phrase is “let’s think of something happy now” but that doesn’t resolve any of the negative emotions that came up just shoves them away.

My boomer dad and gen X mom could not tolerate it, but expected me to tolerate all of our bad feelings and made it my responsibility

My mom begged me to reestablish contact with my dad during their divorce because she felt so bad about him being alone that she’d rather I get abused than face her guilt over leaving the abuse herself

my mom's family will NOT relay "bad news" because "I didn't want to upset you" but I'd like to know about my dad's triple bypass BEFORE surgery! smh

100% when I brought my really difficult stuff to my mom for help as a teen/young adult she reacted with anger. Then she’s surprised I don’t confide in her now.

my mom will use the “oh they look upset, this isn’t even worth it. “with any struggle for people to make change in their life. She also cannot handle me ever being mad at her.

Or you tell them something that makes them uncomfortable and they say, “Anyways! So….” and I’m like…did you not hear me??? There’s no acknowledgment of anything if it’s emotionally uncomfortable

My MIL thinks my husband and I are fighting when we communicate about mundane things with even voices. It’s because they were never taught how to voice their needs. We had to teach ourselves.
