MovieRuntime *Review for Born Evil: The Serial Killer and The Savior* (2024) ½ star I can’t even really review this piece for the content. Since he has never directed one before, I came to it thinking, “Oh wow, a *documentary* series directed by *Michael Bay*, I wonder how his style of filmmaking will take to it!” Then I saw that it was about a “lesser known” serial killer and I thought “I am very wary that his style of filmmaking will be any level of respectful to the subject matter.” Even the best of us get swept up in the sensationalization of deviant behaviour, however, a documentary on these stories should always remember that people actually died. Does Michael Bay’s filmmaking style permeate through this docuseries? Could this possibly mark a change in the way docuseries are shot, much like Michael Crichton’s ER shifted primetime medical dramas? HOLY HELL, I HOPE NOT. While characters die in ER, they are not people. While Bay’s style is absolutely dripping off every frame of the screen may make for “entertainment”, fans of documentaries will most likely find themselves nauseated by the handling of the subject matter. Personally, I was physically unable to make it longer than 5 minutes into the first episode before I became light headed and threw up. Mind you, the show does have a warning for “photosensitive viewers”, but it goes beyond some scenes of flashing lights. I couldn’t find a single take over 10 seconds in the first five minutes. This included scenes of a single person talking from a chair, frantically cutting from a multitude of camera angles. If you can make it through this seizure inducing nightmare I’m not sure you won’t be worse for the wear. www.tiktok.com/@movieruntime #review #tvreview #documentary #docuseries #hbomax #hbo #max #michaelbay #serialkiller #newseries #streaming #streamingnow #tvtok #tvtiktok #warning #photosensitive #triggerwarning
