Indeed. I think African people being overly religious hasn’t helped. Everyone is now Godwin, Blessing, Miracle, I even met a By-Faith and Omo-Jesu.

Especially with the importance Yoruba associate with names, then you are directly responsible for the decline in our cultural identity if you do not give Yoruba kids, Yoruba first names.

It’s just ridiculous. The Punjabis still give their kids Punjabi names speak to them in Punjabi. Those kids aren’t in the least bit confused or affected in school.

one of the things I like about yoruba people is that, they always give their kids native names. I hope they don't stop doing that. I'm igbo & my kids have igbo names.

If people can go out of their way to pronounce Russian names then they can make the effort for phonetically spelt African names!

most British Nigerians have no cultural connection to Naija. but try to feign culture by engaging in ‘jollof wars’, as a performance act for oyinbos. many don’t try to learn their language, either 😪

Me kids are Nigerian/French and Chinese; they have all the names but the Nigerian one is not on the passport as we use it for safety, only family know, like a secret code for the kids

That’s not even what I’m concerned about, it’s about how new parents don’t want to teach their kids our local languages. Only English/ French

I hear both sides. Bullying cam be terrible esp if you don't got a school in London/ major city with a high population of black ppl. as much we want to say times are changing. the hatred sentiment is still rife, even looking at reform party shows. things aren't as great as they could be. but overall I thunk native names are the best but as som1 with family members in school. the bullying can be tormenting.

It’s a shame that people aren’t seeing the significance of this. I can understand the schooling aspect to an extent as my first name is English so I’ve never had an issue when it came to the 1
