prop firms can give you access to capital that would take years to build on your own. but a lot of traders keep blowing accounts because they never really learn how to play the prop firm game. here are 5 reasons you might keep losing prop firm accounts: 1️⃣ you size too big. you trade minis instead of micros, or you use too many contracts too early. your first job is simply to stay in the game. oversized positions leave very little room for normal mistakes, bad entries, or a losing streak. for me, sizing caused far more damage than bad setups ever did. if you want to protect the account, keep the contract size small and give yourself room to breathe. 2️⃣ you develop a “fu** it” mentality. when the only immediate consequence is paying for another reset, it can slowly start feeling like “just another expense.” then when the account is close to failing, the mindset becomes: “fu** it, i’ll just reset.” that’s when trading can start feeling more like gambling than execution. treat every account like it matters and don’t make resets part of your normal routine. 3️⃣ you chase the payout rules. minimum-day requirements and profit targets can create a lot of unnecessary pressure. you start forcing trades, overtrading, and taking setups you normally wouldn’t touch because you’re trying to finish the challenge as quickly as possible. ironically, the more you rush, the harder it becomes to execute well. give yourself more time than you think you need. 4️⃣ you try to make everything in one big trade. i used to constantly chase home runs. but prop firm drawdowns, especially trailing ones, can punish aggressive trading very quickly. i can’t count how many times i had a good runner, watched it retrace, and ended up giving back way too much. now i care much more about clean, repeatable trades than squeezing every last dollar out of one move. base hits → consistency → payouts. 5️⃣ you trade too many accounts too early. multiple accounts don’t fix bad execution. they multiply it. if you can’t manage one account properly, adding five or ten just scales the same mistakes. start with one. take it to a payout. prove to yourself that your execution is repeatable. then think about adding more. the uncomfortable truth is that prop trading isn’t about being the smartest person in the room. it’s about being able to follow simple rules consistently for long enough. i used to blow account after account until i finally got tired of repeating the same cycle. i sized smaller. stopped rushing. focused on one account. treated every trade more seriously. and that’s when things finally started changing. sometimes the boring approach really is the one that works. which of these mistakes has cost you the most? #trading #tradingmindset #howtotrade #propfirms #tradingjourney
