Have you ever seen how a high-speed railway station is actually built? Let’s take a look at the construction of Shanghai East Railway Station. This project set a Chinese record: a 74,000 m² steel roof structure weighing approximately 9,000 tonnes was lifted 13.5 meters vertically into its final position in a single overall lifting operation—setting the current domestic record for the largest one-time overall lifting area of a railway station steel roof structure. What does 9,000 tonnes mean? It is roughly equivalent to lifting about 6,000 cars weighing 1.5 tonnes each as one enormous structure. Instead of completing everything piece by piece at height, the main steel structure and parts of related systems were assembled at a lower elevation before being raised together using a synchronized lifting system. The impressive part is not simply the size—it is moving such an enormous structure safely, synchronously, and precisely. Unfortunately, I wasn’t involved in the construction of Shanghai East Railway Station, but as a structural steel manufacturer, projects like this still make me stop and admire the engineering. Airports, railway stations, stadiums, exhibition centers, industrial buildings, and petrochemical facilities are exactly where structural steel, space frames, steel trusses, tubular trusses, and other long-span structural systems demonstrate their value. Our own work also covers engineering, detailing, fabrication, erection, and construction of structural steel, with projects across different countries and regions. The longer I work in this industry, the more I enjoy studying projects like this—because for those of us working with structural steel, every mega project is an engineering lesson worth learning from. #SteelStructure #SteelFabrication #SteelStructureFactory #SteelConstruction #steelroofstructure
