Crafting an angular bowl from 543 grams of clay, (1 lbs), from beginning to end — with encouragement from a tiny log who never leaves my side. There are almost too many steps to count, and this video, whilst showing most of them, simplifies the process greatly, I also skipped the bisque firing to 1000ºC, sorry about that! Pots spend more time slowly drying and then cooling down in the kilns than they do actually being made by my hands. So much of this craft is spent monitoring thrown wares, moving them around to dry properly to leather hard in order to be trimmed, and then again to bone-dry. This is a skill in itself, as you must be eagle-eyed and often, us potters juggle numerous batches of work at any one time, assessing, reassessing, covering pots, keeping them leather hard overnight, and so on. It’s a lot. Then there’s all the tasks like mixing and wedging clay, blending and sieving glazes. Work that isn’t necessarily considered when crafting each individual pot, but work that nonetheless must be done in order for them to be made. Over the past ten years of posting on social media, the question that likely comes up most is, “How long does ‘X’ take to make?”, and it’s honestly such a tricky question to answer. I’m a quick thrower and trimmer, I think? Yet making pots still takes considerable time, it’s a craft that can’t be rushed or errors are bound to happen and we’re forced to be patient by factors such as kilns cooling and clay hardening. If I had to write down the number of instances where I’ve had to explain that pots can’t be made in a few days’ time, I’d be rich. #pottery #howitsmade #miniaturedachshund #ceramics #satisfying #asmr #process

Turning an angular vase shape at the leather hard stage. For this, I wait until the stoneware is just on the firm side of leather hard, which is something I can test in two ways. First, I’ll gently squeeze the rim and if it easily bends inwards or moves, it’s still far too soft to trim. The second way I check is by dragging a fingertip over the base when the pot is upturned. If my finger smudges the clay or sticks to it, then again, it’s still too soft. The rim section should be dry enough that it holds its shape, and the base should no longer be tacky, nor should the clay easily deform as a finger is dragged over it. Trimming when the pot is overly soft is just asking for trouble, the pots shapes themselves can distort as bladed tools are pressed against it and if you’re turning a foot-ring, well, the chance of making a bowl in the base or bending that area is significantly higher. Much of time during the week is spent managing pots and moving them around to get them to this ideal state for turner. I wish it wasn’t so crucial as it can be very repetitive and if you mess up it’s easy to ruin a whole batch of work, although that’s something I’ve only ever done once. I left a board of thrown mugs outside during my apprenticeship to dry out to leather hard and simply forgot about them for two days. Mushy piles are what I returned to, sodden with rain and slowly spreading out as they crumbled. #pottery #wip #howitsmade #ceramic #contemporaryceramics #potteryvideos
