Bottom plate is nailed to the deck 2nd and 3rd plates are.nailed together as long as the ceiling joists stack on the stud. Thats a waste of time

if you layout properly with floor and roof joist landing on the studs it doesn't matter where the cap plate joints line up. as long as the proper nailing pattern is right you are hood to go. wall

In a perfect layout I’ll split on a stud but worst case I ensure each end of a plate has 3 nails to the floor or 3 to the double top plate

Sometimes I like to just put a stud on either side of the plate rather than the plate only having 3/4” to be combined only by half a stuf

amen, all the hacks here in Ottawa don't line up the joints with studs either then when plumbers or hvacs cut sections of plates out they accidentally cut nails and dull the teeth on their chainsaws

I'm at fault on 18' walls as I get 16' lumber but I do agree with you as it's stronger and makes it easier for other trades to make holes in-between the studs and not dull there bits

I agree with you. Seams over layout, all layouts stack. It’s not just for load purposes but for continuity of HVAC cut outs etc.

I do line all plate joints on the studs. And nail over the studs. Try lifting a wall with nails sticking out in between the studs from the double plate.

I frame like you do. I absolutely hate it when people don't splice plates on a stud. and for top plates I do at least 4 feet away from each other.

if you want to put the top plate on a stud you can't go 3' over because studs go at 16" so you either go 2'8" or 4'
