3 month process condensed into 1 minute 🦎➡️🥚➡️🦎 this is how I breed my giant Jamaican anoles (anolis garmani). you’ve seen me set up these giant @zoomedlabs paludariums before but this time nothing too fancy: we are going for results! Water features and bioactive are amazing for displays, but to be able to ensure the highest possibility of success for reproducing rare species of anolis this is how I do it. I use sphagnum moss as a substrate because it holds humidity well, is anti fungal, anti bacterial, easy to clean/replace, and the lizards generally don’t like to lay their eggs in it. This way I can isolate a specific area, in this case a pot of soil, so I know where the eggs will be laid. I still offer the lizards lots of climbing with these beautiful aged branches and give them natural cover with many bromeliads (I’m a fan of broms and pothos for breeding enclosures because they’re simple and hardy!). Once the lizards have settled and a month or two passes, it’s time to check for eggs! When an egg is found I place them in their own incubation container and 45-55 days later (depending on temps) out comes a brand new baby. This baby will one day be sent off to a new home where hopefully this species will continue to be captive bred so more than just a very select few people can enjoy such unique reptiles. No matter the species, captive breeding is an essential part of keeping the herp hobby alive. Though enclosures like this may not be the most “aesthetic”, they get the job done; where a bioactive would definitely produce lower successful yield of viable offspring. #HerpTime #animals #reptile #captivebreeding #terrarium
