@conflict.echoes: Alaa Salah, became a global symbol during the 2019 Sudanese revolution. Her photograph, titled "Kandake of the Sudanese Revolution" by Lana Haroun, shows Salah standing atop a car, dressed in a traditional white toub, leading chants. This powerful image not only encapsulated the collective aspirations of the Sudanese people for democracy and change but also highlighted the crucial role of women on the front lines of the pro-democracy protests. The chants, drawn from the works of renowned Sudanese poet Azhari Mohamed Ali, included lines such as "The bullet doesn't kill. What kills is the silence of people," which resonated through the demonstrations of 2018-2019 and earlier protests of 2011-2013. Salah’s recitation called upon deep historical and cultural symbols of resistance. * * * Some context for the words used: Terhaqa was a pharaoh of the Twenty-fifth Dynasty of Egypt and the Kingdom of Kush in present-day Sudan. Kandaka is the title given to queens in the ancient Kingdom of Kush between 2450 and 1450 BC. Abdul Alfadeel Almaz was a freedom fighter during the time of British colonisation. The other names mentioned near the end are all victims who died during the protests. Religion tells us if a person sees an evil deed committed they shouldn’t remain quiet. That evil will multiply sixtyfold. The Koz (Regime) is robbing our country’s wealth and they are enjoying it while we irrigate the Nile with our blood that boils. We won’t be silenced and remain quiet in the face of tyrants. Fear has no foundation. My grandfather is Terhaqa. My grandmother is a Kandaka. Abdul Alfadeel Almaz is our knight, we are in awe of him. Mother, the youth have come to life and I am dead from the silence. Hazaa and Sanhouri, Amjad Wali Al Deen, Hazeem, Mona, Majdy. These martyrs are all alive with silk garments in heaven. As Salah recited these verses, the crowd responded by chanting 'Thowra,' meaning 'Revolution!' after each line. This interaction, with the crowd's chants of 'Thowra' following Salah's words, reflects the collective call for change and resilience among the Sudanese people. #sudan #revolutionary #revolution #protest #kandaka #History #kush

What a strong woman! I love her attitude. Not many people would do something like that in a situation like that. It takes a lot of courage.
