@prohorsecanada: Do you want to teach your horse how to lay down like this? 🤩 If so, here are my 7 steps that’ll help you achieve this goal 💪 1. Start by teaching your horse to lower its head on command. Do this by applying gentle pressure on the halter, rewarding every ounce of try in the right direction! This may take some time, but be consistent until you're able to ask for their nose to come all the way down. 2. Teach your horse to shift their weight back with a foot raised. Pick up one of your horse's legs, then ask them to lower their head, bringing their nose and weight back. Once your horse begins shifting their weight backwards, release and reward! Eventually, your horse will begin to offer the lay down. 3. Once your horse understands what you're asking, you can introduce the 'lay down' cue. Use a small whip to tap gently on the horse’s leg, combined with a verbal cue. Help guide them back into the lay down until they make the association. 4. Attempt lay downs after a training session when the horse is more likely to want to roll or rest. 5. Make sure the ground is soft and safe for the horse to lie down on.
