Six months since my cystectomy and ileal conduit surgery and I’ve not had one hospitalisation since. Prior to this I was a revolving door patient under infectious diseases being admitted for infection over and over. We only ever managed to control the infections and never ever cure them. I had one doctor tell me to explore palliative care flippantly and it broke me. I ended up on a massive spiral and felt like I was waiting to die, it got fucking dark. My urology surgery appointment seemed to never come and I was referred to a different surgeon under an urgent referal. My Urogyny had wanted me to get mitroffanoff surgery and I was somewhat unsure cos it still meant I’d be infectious? Anyway, come July I saw my new bladder surgeon who told me and my mum that a mitroffanoff wouldn’t help and was a silly idea and he wanted to remove my bladder fully and try to preserve the other organs around it if possible - instead I’d have a stoma. He promised us this would give me a much better quality of life and tbh I was sold straight away. With all my hospital trauma and cynicism I was really scared to have major surgery. They couldn’t have been more amazing. From start to end my care was impeccable. I felt safe and nurtured and heard (most of the time haha). Every day my surgeon came to check on me, some days poking his head in the door on route to theatre and some days sitting down for a chat. He told my mum before surgery he was going to “save” me to her and do everything in his power for me to have no complications. They looked at my spinal and neck scans before anaesthetic to ensure they didn’t impact cervical instability. They took extra steps to ensure my stomach would be okay, they did as much under general as they could to ensure I wouldn’t be traumatised (like putting my line in etc). They did everything right. The comparison of the misery I used to be in vs where I’m at now is enormous. Never thought I’d be out the other side of it all 😭😭😭❤️ #urostomy #stoma #ilealconduit #cystectomy
