It’s so easy to make everybody happy, it just takes a little more effort. You’re doing a great job and raising happy kids.

Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire has to be one of the most beautiful early modern sites I’ve ever visited. ✨ The Moreton family who lived here were wealthy landlords in the area from at least the 13th century, though the house we see today was an early Tudor construction, likely being first built in 1503 (the Hall and East Wing). The impressive gatehouse that greets visitors is slightly later, dating to about 1560, and has some really beautiful decoration. ✨ The Great Hall is one of the earliest rooms in the house, and has been dated to between 1504 and 1508. Modernisation would come to the house relatively soon though, with William Moreton II beginning work in 1559 to update the property and it is from around this time that the beautiful wall paintings in the Little Parlour date. ✨ Throughout the house there are several brilliant examples of early modern ‘witch marks’ or scorch marks in the wood, thought to have been made with the intention of protecting the property and its inhabitants from dark forces. These also came in the form of scored lines known as ‘witch webs’ thought to trap the evil spirits. Spotting these marks was one of my favourite parts of the visit! ✨ The house is also significant for its stunning Long Gallery, added somewhere between 1560 and 1600 when the Elizabethan fashion for such additions was all the rage. There are some great examples of decorative plasterwork here, the designs of which are taken from a 1556 treatise by mathematician Robert Recorde. ✨ Works have continued on the house throughout its long history; construction and repair projects are recorded throughout the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, with the house’s 19th century inheritor, Elizabeth Moreton, playing a huge role in saving the building from total ruin. The house was eventually passed to the National Trust in 1938 - this being the first time ever that it was not in Moreton possession. ✨ #nationaltrust #littlemoretonhall #britishhistory #englishhistory #interestinghistory #tudorhistory #thetudors #tudors #16thcentury #earlymodern #socialhistory #historytok #historytiktok #tudortok #tudortiktok
