This is the cause of suffering for so many people: they’re always focused on what they’re giving up instead of what they’re getting, and it keeps them chasing happiness but never actually finding it. You don’t want to bring lunch from home because it feels like a sacrifice, but you’re not focusing on the feeling of being debt free. You don’t want to wear a dress you already own to your event, but you’re not focusing on the feeling of freedom when you see your investment accounts making more in a day than you did working. You don’t want to stop online shopping because it’s how you let off stress, but you’re not focusing on the feeling of safety that having money in the bank for emergencies brings. You don’t want to drive an inexpensive car, but you’re not focusing on the feeling of joy when you’ve saved enough to buy your first home. The definition of a sacrifice means to give something up without getting something in return, but changing my habits of overspending or taking the easy way out were not sacrifices, they were stepping stones on my roadmap to success. They weren’t sacrifices because I got something better out of it. Would I rather have more drawers and closets filled with crap I don’t need, or a lifetime of freedom, choice, safety and security?
