✂️🐓 Things to know before you trim your chicken’s wings👇🏼 Wing trimming isn’t something I do routinely for every chicken. Flying is natural, but when it puts one of my chickens in an unsafe situation, I will trim the primary flight feathers to keep her from flying too far. In Blueberry’s case, she had started flying over the coop to roost in the trees at night… just as I caught a raccoon climbing up the side of the coop 😳 If you’re in a similar situation and need to trim your chickens wing feathers, here are a few important things to know: 🪶 Never cut a growing feather. New feathers contain a blood supply and are called blood feathers, so always make sure the feathers you’re trimming are fully mature. I don’t recommend trimming chicks or young birds that are still growing and learning to fly. 🪶 Trim only the long primary flight feathers. Leave the shorter secondary feathers intact. 🪶 Trim both wings evenly so she stays balanced when flying short distances and heights (like roosting in the coop). 🪶 Don’t cut too close to the wing. I use the shorter feathers (coverts) above the primaries as a guide. 🪶 Keep her calm. You can gently cover her head with a towel if she’s anxious. 🪶 The flight feathers will grow back after molting and may need to be trimmed again. Trimming her wings will not make her completely flightless. It simply reduces the lift so she can’t get herself into unsafe places. Now, Blueberry is safely roosting inside the coop. 🥰 #backyardchickens #feathertrim #chickenkeeping #chickencare #petchickens
