She visited doctors and underwent medical examinations, but she could not find a satisfactory explanation. Things became even more frightening when her parents, who had travelled from China to help care for her, reportedly became sick after drinking water from her bottle. Yuan eventually began suspecting that something at her workplace was making her ill. In a desperate attempt to uncover the truth, she installed a hidden camera near her desk. What the camera captured would change everything. Surveillance footage reportedly showed David Xu tampering with the area where she kept her water bottle, including an incident in which he appeared to pour a substance into it. Yuan reported the matter to police. Investigators subsequently found dangerous levels of cadmium, a toxic heavy metal, in samples of her water. Tests also reportedly detected elevated cadmium levels in blood samples from Yuan and her parents. In March 2019, Xu was arrested. In March 2024, he received two years of probation rather than a lengthy prison sentence. He was also ordered to stay away from Yuan and her parents.
