Another one mites the dust 🥲 There is a lot of stuff that can be found in dust and it varies between houses and the life habits of their residents. The main components though are usually microfibres from clothes, hair from humans and pets, dead skin cells, dead bugs, dry food, plant matter, soil particles , pollen, algae, fungi, bacteria, certain polluants (PCB, plasticizers and flame retardants) and behold…. DUST MITES!! 🕷️ Unlike popular belief, dust mite aren’t insects but arachnids and are closely related to spiders, ticks and harvestmen. They live wherever there’s dust; carpets, bedding, fabrics and furnitures. Dust contains the favourite food source of mites like shed human skin, molds, bacteria and yeasts. There are lots of people allergic to dust mites; these people are usually genetically predisposed to develop allergic reactions which manifest as asthma, eczema, rhinitis and conjunctivitis. Allergens from dust mites, especially faecal matter, can become suspended in the air when vacuuming, bed-making, dusting or any other activity that can cause those allergens to become suspended in the air. What causes the allergies is when those allergen particles are inhaled because it triggers the immune system to release histamine, which cause inflammation! House mites are very tough little animals, they’re able to survive in dry habitats which would be lethal to other terrestrial arthropods. They can extract water from the air and control water moss by shutting down feeding and defaecation 😳 Video taken with my iPhone 14 Pro mounted on a BX53 Olympus microscope with an @ilabcam adapter 🔬 #fyp #microscope #science #house #ew
