One of the biggest misconceptions with bottle feeding a newborn is that you just pop the bottle in their mouth and off you go! However, bottle feeding can actually be just as complex and need just as much support as breastfeeding, as there are so many different formulas, bottles, teats, sterilisers, bottle makers etc on the market, and a variety of ways to position a bottle fed baby, that it is understandable that families feel very confused and overwhelmed. With newborns specifically, the elevated side lying paced bottle feeding strategy can massively help with the steady introduction of a bottle, for a few reasons: 🍼 Regulates milk flow by enabling the parent better opportunity to pace the feed to the feeding ability of the baby. 🍼 It takes pressure off of babies body so they can relax into the feed. 🍼 The elevated position supports reflux and air intake. 🍼 Babies that have a lot of tension will feel a lot more relaxed due to their body being totally supported. 🍼 It mimics breastfeeding as close as possible in those early days when baby is slowly learning how to feed. In the first video you will see the baby is in the traditional cradle position which is how most people think you should hold a baby when they feed from a bottle, but actually most tiny babies struggle with this as gravity is working against them, thus creating a water board effect with the milk. Plus, if you have a baby who is refluxy, has tension, tongue tie, then they will not want to be on their back in a near horizontal position. In the second video you will see all the elements of paced bottle feeding which is: 🍼 Parent’s legs have a small stool underneath them to elevate them. 🍼 Pillow used to elevate baby and keep them comfortable. 🍼 Side lying position. 🍼 Bottle held horizontally. 🍼 Milk not filling the whole teat. If you have any questions on any areas of bottle feeding, let me know in the comments below! #babysleep #babysleeptips #babysleepconsultant #sleeptraining #sleepconsultant #bottlefeeding
