@jammyhistory: This is the very first ever motion picture film! It is titled ‘Sallie Gardner at the Gallop’ (sometimes known as ‘The Horse in Motion’). Let’s learn about it! As the 19th century progressed the capture of images using photography equipment began to rapidly develop. As the technology developed the possibilities for what it could be used for began to be explored. Eadweard Muybridge, an English photographer and film pioneer, was attempting to capture an image of a horse galloping across a track. He had captured still images of the horse at full speed, with both its feet off the ground, but sceptics refused to believe the photos were genuine. And so, on the 15th June 1878, Muybridge went to take a moving image of the horse in action. In order to capture this, Muybridge arranged 12 cameras in a line that would automatically trigger as the horse passed. The images would then be rapidly switched whilst being projected onto a screen, thus creating the impression of there only being one image that was moving. The following year he repeated this with 24 cameras so that he could capture an even clearer motion of the horse galloping.
