The Soviet approach emphasized reliability and practical application over the methods of their American competitors. While NASA focused on the lunar landing as a prestige project, Soviet engineers developed long-duration space stations, automated probes, and heavy-lift capabilities that established the foundation for permanent human presence in space. The material basis for this success lay in the concentration of scientific talent and industrial capacity that central planning made possible. The Soviet Academy of Sciences coordinated research across disciplines without the duplication and secrecy that characterize competition between private corporations. When the decision was made to pursue specific objectives, whether the Luna program or the Vostok flights, entire sectors of the economy could be directed toward their accomplishment without concern for quarterly returns or patent disputes. People will often point to the eventual American lunar landing as evidence of Soviet failure, but this misreads both history and political economy. The Apollo program was itself a massive state intervention into what was supposedly a free market system, proving that even the most advanced capitalism requires socialist methods to accomplish great collective tasks.
