We made a choice years ago to foster creative growth through experimentation rather than perfection. We chose this (sometimes controversial) musical path for many reasons. When Max was very young and just starting to play piano regularly (around 3 years old), we noticed that he was being led by joy. Anytime we would intervene with either a “correction” or a casual “lesson”, we saw that joy dim. A light go out. His own curiosity kept him playing, and we transitioned quickly into being his fascinated audience. We live in a world that rewards perfection. It makes sense — stunning art and remarkable achievements have been born from flawlessness. Many humans over the years have commented about the presence of flaws in Max’s playing, and we understand why. Children half his age are playing Chopin and Mozart at a very high level. It’s incredible and we genuinely applaud their exceptional talent. Our goal with sharing our son’s music is to show an alternative path for creation. One that meanders, gets lost at times and yet finds itself embedding deeply into our hearts. Its imperfections and lack of adherence to the rules make it something unique and deeply special. A mandala of sorts… impermanent but meaningful and mindful in the moment. When I look back on videos of Max playing his heart songs, I rarely see him flinch at a “bum note”. I do, however, see him circle back and get it “right” the next time around. With no loss of momentum or confidence. Progress is being made, but on his timeline and based on his own set of internal goals. What a gift to witness such a pure and authentic process. His expectation for the moment is to just play and to share the melodies that live in his mind. He loves to see our reactions, but they aren’t is main motivation. It is my hope, and has always been my intention with this page to encourage anyone who has a heart to create to let it be messy. To just get it out. To encourage your children to do the same. I think you might just surprise yourself in the process. ♥️ #fypageシ #progressnotperfection #musical #piano #pianomusic #newmusic #fy #originalmusic #peacefulpiano
