@achilles.bc: The Paris of the period sat just above some 200 miles of limestone tunnels that were carved to provide the stones that would be used during the initial construction of the city. These tunnels, which were also used as mines, were so deep and wide that by the early 1800s, the weight of the city above was creating giant sinkholes in which all buildings and structures were collapsing. Charles had in mind to use these gigantic and deep tunnels to rebury the bodies. The then-king gave Charles the task of stabilizing the entire underground mining system to save the city from complete collapse. Mine tunnels were the most suitable place for the reburial of the dead, but the fact that the upper ground was not solid and was very old made this stabilization necessary before the reburial process began. Despite the magnitude of the difficulty, Charles accomplished this task by strengthening the tunnels in a period of 8 years.
