Rightwingers have blamed the collapsed bridge in Baltimore on the fact that the Transportation Secretary is gay. On Tuesday 26 March, the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland collapsed after it was hit by a 100 tonne cargo ship. Footage shows the ship hitting a column supporting the 1.6 mile long bridge causing it to collapse within seconds and burst into flames. Six people who were plunged into the river when it collapsed are presumed dead. Two people were rescued early in the day. Authorities believe all eight people were part of the construction crew working on the bridge. Maryland’s Governor said that the bridge was “up to code”, and Joe Biden has said the federal government will pay to rebuild the bridge. But conservatives have already jumped on the bandwagon of blaming the left, and specifically the Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who is gay. One popular conservative X account tweeted a picture of Buttigieg claiming he would “address the Baltimore Bridge collapse as soon as he’s done chestfeeding”, a phrase that transmasculine people often use to describe feeding their children. Rightwingers have been saying for years that Buttigieg chest or breastfeeds his children as a homophobic joke. Even the shamed former congress member George Santos jumped on the bandwagon, tweeting that he was “revoking Pete’s gay card” in reference to a video of the Transportation Secretary speaking about how road projects have historically divided communities of colour. The video from 2021 has been circulated widely by conservatives since the incident, despite the fact that Buttigieg makes no reference to the bridge in Baltimore. The Transportation Secretary has not risen to the homophobic and baseless claims made against him. Instead, he took to X to share messages of support for first responders at the scene and to announce that the Biden administration will do “whatever it takes, at every step, to help the people of Baltimore heal and rebuild”. #baltimore #baltimorebridge #francisscottkeybridge #uspolitics #usnews #lgbtq
