@unchartedcustoms: Will It Laser? - Special Edition - Ice Bucket Who remembers the 52 part series called “Will It Laser?” that I did every week for an entire year? Well, it’s not fully back, but this task certainly warranted a special edition video. My objective was to engrave on a heavy duty Yeti ice bucket. While I knew the powder coating would come off just like any cup or tumbler, the challenge was actually getting it inside the laser, focused and angled to the right height, and spinning it correctly on the rotary. I first removed the honeycomb tray and knives to see if I could get proper clearance, but it wasn’t enough. I then removed drawer leaving just the floor of the laser and the exposed belts. From there I had plenty of clearance but was still pretty far away from the focal point without any way to automatically lift the rotary. Slowly, by inserting different thickness material onto the laser floor, I built up the correct height needed to get a good focus point. I also covered the exposed belts to ensure than no stray beam could harm them. Then I realized that the slope of the bucket was more than the rotary could account for. I decided to manually tilt it slightly by putting a block on one side. At last, I had a 6mm focus point for my 2” lens across the entire face of the bucket. From there it was just like any other cup I’ve done on the rotary. The Rotoboss turned it to perfection and the slight tilt didn’t have a huge effect on its ability to move the bucket correctly. The lesson here is that if it looks possible, it probably is. It may not be as easy as you thought. And it may take some time to figure out a solution, but once you do, it’s all worth it. You can unlock so much potential by just taking the time to solve a problem rather than thinking it probably can’t be done.
