1.Studying Only When Exams Are Close. Engineering courses build on one another. When you postpone studying, you're not just creating more work, you are allowing small gaps in understanding to become major ones. Don't wait for exam pressure to create discipline. 2. Reading Without Solving. You can read an entire chapter on Thermodynamics and still struggle with a simple calculation. Why? Because recognising a solution is not the same as being able to produce one. After learning a concept, close your notes and solve problems without assistance. Engineering is learned through application. 3. Memorising Formulas Without Understanding Them. Knowing that an equation exists isn't enough. You should understand: What each variable represents. The assumptions behind the equation. Where it comes from. When it can be applied. Otherwise, one unfamiliar exam question can expose the weakness immediately. 4. Ignoring the Topics You Find Difficult. This is one of the most expensive habits in engineering school. Students often spend hours studying topics they already understand because it feels comfortable. Meanwhile, the difficult topic remains untouched. Your weakest topics deserve your attention not your avoidance. 5. Treating Past Questions as an Emergency Tool. Past questions shouldn't be something you discover two days before an examination. Use them throughout the semester. They help you identify: How concepts are tested. Your weak areas. Common question patterns. How much detail you actually need to know. Don't just use past questions to predict the exam. Use them to diagnose yourself. 6. Confusing Long Study Hours With Productive Study. Sitting with a textbook for six hours doesn't automatically mean you studied for six hours. If most of that time was spent checking your phone, rereading the same page, or staring at problems without attempting them... You were present, but you weren't learning. Measure your study sessions by what you can now do, not how long you sat down. 7. Being Afraid to Ask for Help. Sometimes, pride costs more marks than difficulty. If you don't understand something, ask your lecturer, coursemate, tutor, or someone who understands it. Struggling alone for three weeks isn't a sign of intelligence. Knowing when to seek help is part of becoming a competent engineer. 8. Neglecting the Foundation. Many advanced engineering problems are difficult because the basics underneath them are weak. If you're struggling with a topic, ask: "What am I supposed to already understand before I can understand this?" Sometimes you don't need to study harder. You need to go one level backward. 9. Trying to Copy the "Smartest Student's" Study Routine. Your coursemate may study for five hours at night and perform brilliantly. That doesn't mean five hours at night is what you need. Understand how you learn best, identify your weaknesses, and build a system around them. Don't copy someone's routine. Learn from their principles. 10. Waiting for Motivation. Motivation will disappear. Deadlines won't. There will be days when you're tired, distracted, frustrated, or simply don't feel like studying. That's why discipline matters. You don't need to feel ready. You need to start. THE REAL PROBLEM IS, Your GPA is often not destroyed by one terrible decision. It's gradually affected by small compromises repeated consistently: "I'll study tomorrow." "I'll understand it later." "I can skip this lecture." "I'll practise before the exam." "I still have plenty of time." Until suddenly... The exam is tomorrow, the syllabus is huge, and the confidence is gone.
