Other Videos

This is most of the meals that I ate on a 3 night/4 day trip to the Chicago Basin in Colorado. I didn’t take videos of everything, for example lunch is missing on most days, but I have details on that below. I am by no means an expert backpacker, but I used my dietitian hat to make sure we brought enough food! I went on this trip with my dad and my brother. This basin has the last four 14ers (mountains over 14,000 feet) that my brother needed to hike to check off all 58…which he did in just 3 years and 1 month! What a privilege it was to be able to do this trip with him! The Chicago Basin is very remote. We drove 7 hours from Denver (!), took a 2.5 hour steam train from Durango (!), then hiked in 6 miles to camp. We opted for freeze dried food for most meals, plus uncrustables for lunches, lots of bars, trail mix, and candy. Food is fuel, and it’s never more apparent than when you’re hiking at altitude! My favorite meal was the @mtnhouse veggie chorizo breakfast scramble, followed by the @alpineaire forever young Mac and cheese. Honorable mention to my mom for hanging on to Taco Bell hot sauce packets, which I added to most meals. I brought peanut butter packs, honey packs, and tortillas for lunch, but hunger signals get all messed up when hiking, so I opted for bars and candy and uncrustables instead. Next time I’ll probably do English muffins instead. But the tortillas were great with the freeze dried meals. Honorable mention to the chips ahoy dipped in peanut butter on the last night. And big shout out to the Durango steam train concessions stand!! Last but not least, leave no trace and check food storage rules before camping. We opted for bear cans because they’re just easy. On another note that is relevant because food…is fuel, people who don’t pack out their TP get a big 🙁 and 👎 from me!
