@_sethhughes: Do you trust yourself? It’s a weird question isn’t it. Subconsciously, the questions creates separation, between ‘you’ and ‘yourself,’ and it implies that one bit of you, must keep an eye on the other bit of you. In a society built on selling you addictive products you dont need, trusting oneself to not indulge too heavily seems like a big task. And that is the basis of what Frans de Waal coined, ‘veneer theory.’ Which suggests our civilisation is thin ‘veneer’ protecting us from our innate evil nature. Our culture still has original sin in its foundation and on top of that, also believes the universe to be a cold, mechanistic place, indifferent to human existence. So we’ve separated ourselves from nature two times over, first through religion and then through science. If you want to learn more about veneer theory, and gain a clearer understanding of why I don think humans aren’t born with with innate badness in them, I’d highly recommend @rutger_bregman book, Human Kind.
