@wearedigitaldiplomacy: US President Joe Biden “believes firmly that NATO is in Ukraine’s future at some point,” according to Admiral John Kirby, National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the White House. The remarks come the same day NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was in Washington DC to speak at the Wilson Center research group and to meet with Biden later at the White House. Stoltenberg’s visit today is laying the groundwork for what’s expected to be a pivotal summit of NATO leaders in Washington next month. The mutual-defense alliance has grown in strength and size since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine two years ago, with both Sweden and Finland joining. Ukraine is also eyeing a membership into the Alliance, and the mid-July summit should provide more clarity about timing and format of Ukraine’s future negotiations with NATO members. “The idea is to move them so close to membership that when the time comes, when there is consensus, they can become a member straight away,” Stoltenberg said. #zelensky #digitaldiplomacy
