#woof Dogs are often called the most loyal of animals, and there is real science behind the reputation. Loyalty is a human word, and what researchers measure is attachment: a dog's tendency to seek out, stay near and take comfort from particular people. In the 1990s, scientists adapted a test used on human infants, the Strange Situation, for dogs. A dog is left briefly with a stranger and then reunited with its owner. Most dogs behave much as securely attached toddlers do. They are more relaxed with their owner than with a stranger, they use the owner as a "secure base" for exploring, and they greet the owner's return with obvious relief. Wolves raised by humans don't show the same pattern, which suggests the bond has been shaped by domestication and not only by upbringing. The bond also works through biology. A well-known Japanese study found that when a dog and its owner gaze into each other's eyes, both of their oxytocin levels rise. Oxytocin is the hormone linked to bonding between parents and infants. The researchers described it as a feedback loop, because more eye contact raises oxytocin, and more oxytocin leads to more eye contact. Wolves don't do this, and dogs have also evolved facial muscles that make their eyes look larger and more expressive, which may help trigger human caregiving instincts. Brain imaging fits the picture too. In fMRI studies, dogs trained to lie still in the scanner showed strong activity in reward-related brain areas when they smelled their owner, more than for familiar or unfamiliar people. Dogs can also match a person's emotional voice and face, which suggests they read us more fully than many people assume. Dogs also respond to human emotion in ways that look like care. Many dogs approach and stay close to a crying person instead of a person who is humming or talking. One study found that dogs would open a door to reach a crying owner faster than one who was just talking, though stress seemed to motivate the dogs, so it may be personal distress and not empathy in the human sense. Dogs also show a version of emotional contagion, picking up on their owner's stress, and one study found that owners' and dogs' stress hormones tend to move together over time. When a person is grieving or ill, many dogs change their behavior, becoming clingier, quieter or more watchful. It's worth keeping a few caveats in mind. Dogs bond partly because we feed, shelter and play with them, so their attachment is shaped by what we provide as well as by who we are. Individual dogs also vary a lot, depending on genetics, early socialization and past experiences, and a poorly treated dog may be fearful or distant even toward a kind owner. Researchers also can't confirm that dogs feel love the way humans do, since we can only observe behavior, hormones and brain activity. But the evidence suggests that the closeness is real and has an emotional basis, and that thousands of years of living alongside humans have shaped dogs to form deep attachments to us.
