Unlike criminal defendants, civil defendants don't have to attend their trials, but they generally try to. The trial in the wrongful death lawsuit against Rebecca Grossman and Scott Erickson in Los Angeles is expected to last two months, and Erickson's lawyer told a jury "he is going to be here as much as he can." Scott Erickson retired from Major League Baseball in 2006 after pitching for 15 seasons with six teams. He and Grossman were speeding alongside each other in their SUVs on Sept. 29, 2020, after leaving a restaurant in Westlake Village, California, when Grossman struck brothers Mark Iskander, 11, and Jacob Iskander, 8, in a marked crosswalk. Grossman is serving 15 years to life in prison after a jury in 2024 convicted her of five crimes, including two counts of second-degree murder. Erickson was not charged with a crime. The boys' parents, Nancy and Karim Iskander, are suing him, Grossman and Grossman's husband, Peter Grossman, for wrongful death. His lawyer Deborah S. Tropp-Thompson told a jury in her opening statement on Friday (April 24) that he will testify he intentionally sped up to avoid hitting the boys and didn't realize Grossman had struck them until later. @Meghann Cuniff She began her 28-minute opening by telling jurors that "Mr. Erickson, as you know, played baseball growing up." "He eventually went to college and continued to play ball. He was lucky enough to be drafted to the minors, and then he went and played for the majors for several years. When he was done playing baseball, Mr. Erickson went into the media and began working for the local PAC-12 Network, calling and announcing UCLA games," Tropp-Thompson said. Erickson "eventually moved to Nevada" after the COVID pandemic, "where he lives now, where he does the golf circuit for charities," she said. "He is going to be here as much as he can. This trial is important to him, and taking the stand is important to him. If he is not here every day, it is because he is in Nevada. He will be here as often as he can," Tropp-Thompson said.
