In your defense, I’ve never had a mat that severe, but I’ve had depression hair and I’ve never had success brushing it wet. Dry brushing ALL. THE. WAY.

I’ve dealt with mats like this and my biggest tip is you must finger detangle and finger comb before you even think of brushing.
